Apparently, your eyelash curler has a life span

For years, I’ve been using the the Shiseido eyelash curler. The curler itself has a nice contour to it and it also comes with an extra rubber pad for replacement when first one when it wears out. So what happens when the replacement pad wears out? You make a trip to Shisedo and buy another pack for a few bucks. Makes sense right?
About a year ago, I switched over to the Shu Uemura eyelash curler because I heard that it was the best one out there. And I have to admit, it curls well and curls all my lashes { not that there is much to curl, pout }. This eyelash curler also comes with an extra silicone replacement pad like all eyelash curlers should. Nice.
I wore out the silicone pad that came with the curler quite some time ago, so I switched to the replacement. Over time { probably not very long } I ended up tearing a rip in the replacement too. Maybe I’m curling my lashes too hard? Anyways, curling with a rip in the pad is a bad idea. Your eyelashes get caught and then… they’re gone! Thank goodness for falsies, right?
I finally made my way down to the Shu Uemura counter at Holt Renfrew to buy some replacements. And guess what? Shu Uemura does NOT sell replacement pads! The associate explained that the curler comes with a replacement pad, and each pad should last about 3-6 months. By the time both pads are done with, it’s time to replace the eyelash curler anyway.
. . . . .
But there’s NOTHING wrong with the curler itself. It’s in pristine condition. It’s flawless. Perfect. I’ve only owned 3 eyelash curlers all my life, and you’re telling me I should be replacing them every 6-12 months? I can’t imagine why… it’s not like it’s unsanitary. You can clean it!
How often do you replace your eyelash curler?
Have you ever thought about it?
Regardless, I learned something new:
- An eyelash curler pad should last you up to 6 months max, probably less
- The eyelash curler itself should be replaced every 6-12 months
- Sometimes it’s genuinely difficult to believe things sales associates tell you — do you really need to replace your curler that often, do you really??
XO,

I really doubt eyelash curlers should only be replaced every 6-12 months. Sounds like every other spiel that I’ve heard come out of a salesperson just to make sure they reach their “budget”. It’s really BS. Why the heck would they give you a replacement pad then? *Sigh* Unfortunately, that tends to be why high-end stores get to place a higher price sticker on their products – this extra bit of “knowledge”.
That sounds pretty crazy. However, even on Sephora’s website, the shu uemura eye lash curler pads should be replaced every 3 months, and the curler should be replaced every 6 months. WHAT! that’s lame.
Especially when shiseido allows you to buy replacements. You should go to sephora and say you lost the replacement pad for your shu uemura’s, and see if the shiseido one fits. Haha
I’ve replaced my Shu Uemura curler at least twice already because I find that after awhile it gets loose (it’s hard to explain!)… like the hinges or mini-screws on the curler. I don’t know. I don’t know if that even affects the quality of your curl. Replacing your curler every 6-12 months is ridiculous,it eventually annoys me so much that I get a new one after less than 2 years usually. Even with the replacement pad I get, I use my curler for as long as I can before I get a new one. I’ve been wanting to try the Shiseido because I hear it’s better. The Shu Uemura curler never gets my end lashes! :@ I think it’s time to invest in their mini curlers
That’s ridiculous, no way should you have to replace a perfectly usable tool! Could you just fit in a regular ol’ cheapy pad from the drugstore?
I’ve had my shu uemura curler for a year probably and it seems to work perfectly fine. If you don’t drop it or anything, i don’t think there’s really a need to replace it. Apparently dropping it will make it fall out of alignment or somthing. I need to get some replacement pads though, but the old ones still do the job. Did they say why you have to replace it after a year ?
What…that’s crazy talk! I’ve had my shu uemura for about 3+ years now and it work’s fine.
I wouldn’t think you have to replace it all that often. That seems way too often. Maybe it’s a ploy to make you spend more money??!
P.S. Wow! It’s so great to here that you did ballet for 10 years. I would love the flexibility, posture and grace. And you little comment was cute (suite) lol. :)
I heard that the Shu Uemura eyelash curler metal degrades over time…which is why you need to replace it. MAC eyelash curlers is a similar fit to the Shu Uemura ones..and is made of a metal that does not degrade. Give that a try!
I think it is just a way for the company to sell more. Maybe they make the curler in a way that it degredes over time. Or maybe they’re just bs-ing.
hmmm i’ve never even replaced mine. i only replaced it because i once lost it somewhere..heee
have u tried buying other brand’s curler pads that may work with the shu uemura one ?
Dude, I am completely freaked out by those and have never used one. Ridiculous…I know!
Yeah, it’s pretty ridic. On the bright side, Shiseido’s replacement pads will fit in your Shu curler. :)
That’s how they suck all your money away! I love how Shiseido comes with so many extra pads…. except I always loose them.
So Shu Uemura is better than Shiseido?
….well other than the fact that they don’t sell replacements…
Yeah, just sounds like they don’t want to sell replacements to me. I don’t think it really needs to be replaced. I hardly ever use my eye lash curler. I’m lazy.
I’ve been using my Shu for 2-3 years now and I still haven’t replaced it. As for the pad, I’ve been lucky to be living off my 2nd set as I clean and keep it in tip top condition.
I have, however, seen places like daiso, shoppers, etc etc selling replacement pads. I don’t know how good of a fit they will be though.
That sounds ridiculous! Almost like Shu wants us to keep spending money on the products. I’d say if it still operates properly and does the job, no need to change the actual curler. I’ve been using my shiseido curler for years now and it still does the job! =P Silly sales people.

Todo dinбmica y muy positiva! :)
Gracias

yeah, that is way ridiculous. actually, from googling about time replacement for my eyelash curler rubber pad, i got the impression that it is about every 6 months. what was impressive to me though when i stopped by my local nordstrom’s to buy rubber pads for my shiseido curler, the SA told me that if i clean it, take good care of it by curling before applying mascara, pads can last up to a year. i was a little shocked that she told me such an answer. but i can see that because if i hadn’t used my curler those couple of times after mascara, it could very well last up to a year almost.
I just call bs on the whole idea that the mechanism degrades. It’s a scissor joint, it’s not some advanced technological science. It’s entirely mechanical, there is nothing inherently special about the pivot joint in their curler. As long as it keeps squeezing up and down it’s working. Unless it actually breaks or you live somewhere it’s so damp it rusts through, there is no reason to replace it. Even though I love mine, it really bothers me that all the salespeople spout this crap about the mechanism. I have bought some replacement pads from other manufacturers which did work ok, but some of them are only rounded on one side, or don’t fit edge to edge. I wish Shu would just stop lying about this and sell replacement pads.
I’m totally with you Amber! I love their curler, but I’ve stopped using it because it’s hard to find a replacement pad that really fits. Oh well. Now.. I’m using Shiseido and buying their replacements! Works for me. :)
That’s ridiculous. I’ve had my Shu for about 10 years now and just today changed to the refill pad! I admit I do not use it every single day, but it still works beautifully. They sell CVS Essence of Beauty brand curler refill pads, which I intend to purchase when I need to (which I will do more often now after seeing my curler work even better with a NEW pad!) :-p

Changing the pad on the curler really does make it just like new! It’s funny how we fail to notice how worn out it is sometimes.
